A newly announced game in the Super Mario franchise will be coming to the Nintendo Switch next year, and Princess Peach will finally get to take her place in the spotlight in the new 3D-style world. Previously, Peach starred in a Nintendo DS game, Super Princess Peach, which played as a traditional Mario platformer experience where the tables were turned and she had to rescue Mario and Luigi for once. Though that game was well received by fans, the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom has not been the lead protagonist since that time, which makes this surprise announcement all the more fulfilling.
Peach's yet-untitled new game was announced at a Nintendo Direct event on the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel, although not much information has been given beyond that very quick sneak peek. The short trailer shown during the Nintendo Direct is little more than a teaser of what is to come, with the promise of more information to be released at a later date. The recent The Super Mario Bros. movie portrayed the iconic Peach as a competent character who perhaps was even more capable than Mario in many ways, and is deserving of her own title. Her character in that movie could be a foreshadowing of what to expect in this upcoming game.
The gameplay details in the trailer don't provide much for eager fans to go off of yet, but Peach's color-changing dress does give the impression that she will have new powers based on her appearance. Princess Peach is shown running through a side-scrolling-style level, encountering new enemies, and interacting with what appears to be a helpful, smiling star with ribbons trailing from it. The companion star that appears to follow Peach could be the source of much of her magical abilities and is a cute ally to the Princess in a world that appears devoid of her toads.
Gameplay Details The New Princess Peach Game Trailer Shows
The very short teaser trailer shows Princess Peach's adventure happening on what appears to be a stage type of setting. Background trees and other objects look similar to set designs for plays, and a red curtain is visible. This unique setting is reminiscent of the Paper Mario and Yoshi's Woolly World games in being an imaginative location for an adventure to take place. The lack of her Mushroom Kingdom toads is evident and surprising, and it likely will be revealed as a plot point when new information regarding the narrative of this performance is given.
Princess Peach has long been a fan-favorite in the Super Mario universe, and recently with The Super Mario Bros. movie she has proven herself to be a capable fighter in her own right. Her previous Super Princess Peach game was popular but did not do much to show off Peach as a strong hero. Not many details about her new game are known at this time other than that Peach will clearly be a competent and intelligent star of the show this time around, and her star companion is hopefully as useful as it is adorable. As an entry into the Super Mario franchise, this new Princess Peach game appears to fit right in.
