A skeletal NPC named Withers is a mysterious character you can recruit in Baldur's Gate 3 who provides unorthodox help to your party. Found deep in an underground dungeon, Withers has the ability to respec character stats and fetch wayward souls into service to your group as Hirelings. Although you will have to spend some gold for Withers' services, this undead can even resurrect your friends for the right price.

Withers has the ability to create Hirelings from wayward souls, giving you temporary members for a party out of twelve available with different names, backgrounds, and skills. Hirelings are not companions in Baldur's Gate 3, so there are no quests or interactions for them. However, the diverse range of classes to choose from gives you a chance to build your party without having to rely on the abilities of specific characters.

How to Find Withers in Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 Withers Special Vendor NPC at your Camp

Withers can be found within the Dank Crypt, an area you might explore during the "Explore the Ruins" quest, inside a Richly Adorned Sarcophagus. Waking up the skeletal figure starts a brief conversation, where Withers asks you about the worth of mortal life. A satisfying answer will recruit Withers to your side as he returns to your Camp, where you may interact with him whenever you wish.

Once you recruit Withers, he can resurrect a dead character for 200 Gold, recruit a Hireling as a temporary party member for 100 Gold, or give you a chance to Respec your character for 100 Gold.

Speaking with Withers back at the Camp reveals how you can recruit Hirelings, purchase a resurrection, or Respec a character. Whenever an important character dies, the chance to bring them back to life allows you to regain access to their storyline or interactions. This is an expensive service though, as Withers asks for 200 Gold in exchange for bringing a fallen friend back from the dead in Baldur's Gate 3.

For 100 Gold, Withers will let you go back to the Character Creation screen and redistribute your Stats in a complete Respec of your avatar. This allows you to pick a new Class or subclass, or adjust your stats to better fit your build. Those who recruit Withers in Baldur's Gate 3 have a great opportunity to change not just their scores, but the features, spells, and other abilities in whatever way they choose.
