The console release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 is now a great topic of discussion, especially following the game’s release for PC in August. The new RPG by Larian Studios is not yet available for PS5 or Xbox consoles, despite being on PC. It is a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, though it is set in the far future, many years after the events of the previous title. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a turn-based RPG that has been in early access since 2020, but has finally had its definitive version released for all to play.

It is not available for all platforms, as Baldur’s Gate 3 is only on PC for now. Nevertheless, there is good news for players who do not own a gaming PC and want to play the new RPG on their PS5 consoles – but not so much for those who own Xbox consoles. Baldur’s Gate 3 is making its way to consoles fairly soon, significantly expanding its possible player base.

Luckily, the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS5 is not too far away. As was previously announced by the developer, the turn-based RPG will arrive for PlayStation 5 on September 6. This seems to be the definitive release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Sony’s home console hardware family, as there have been no indications of an eventual delay. This information is backed by several of the game’s communication channels, including the official profile for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Twitter, which states in its bio that the games arrives for PS5 on the aforementioned date.

While things are a bit more optimistic on Sony’s side, players with Microsoft consoles may have to wait a while longer – and perhaps to no answer at all. The discussion regarding the Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been happening for a long time and, so far, there has been no official mention of it actually existing. As stated by Video Games Chronicle (VGC), Larian Studios has indicated that an Xbox console version of the RPG will not arrive anytime before 2024. The developer’s director of publishing, Michael Douse, talked about the matter on Twitter.

Douse mentions that the team’s engineers are working on the split-screen co-op mode for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Series S, which has been the core of the technical issues impeding its release on Xbox consoles altogether. The studio is working to maintain feature parity across all platforms, so this seems to be the source of the problem behind Baldur’s Gate 3 not being on Xbox. Douse also mentions that the team may have more information about this near the end of 2023.

Although Douse does not directly imply that it will actually release next year, a late-year announcement does come with the implication that, if Baldur’s Gate 3 were to arrive for Xbox consoles, it would happen sometime in 2024. The problematic split-screen feature is running normally on Xbox Series X, but the main issue seems to be with Series S. There is also the matter of Microsoft’s publishing policy, which does not allow a game to be released for Series X and not Series S, as they are part of the same family. This is another reason why Baldur’s Gate 3 is not becoming available on Xbox Series X too soon.
