Summary

  • Invincible season 2 will be released in two parts to allow for a pause and digestion of the narrative, similar to The Walking Dead.
  • Episode 4 of Season 2 will be a big, mid-season finale kind of episode that may require a break due to its impact.
  • Season 2 will introduce new characters, including Angstrom Levy voiced by Sterling K. Brown, who poses a different kind of threat that Mark will have to outsmart.

Invincible creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman has explained why season 2 will be released in two parts. The series is adapted from Kirkman's Invincible comics, with season 1 releasing in the spring of 2021. Following a more than two-year hiatus, season 2 will debut on November 3, with the first four episodes set to be released weekly throughout November, but the four remaining episodes that make up the second half of the season not releasing until an unspecified time in 2024.

While speaking with Collider, Kirkman explained that Invincible season 2 is being split in two parts for narrative and scheduling reasons. He also teased one of the season's biggest episodes, and how said episode will relate to breaking the season into two parts. Read Kirkman's comments below:

It's a little bit of the production process just because ramping things up has taken a lot longer than we thought. But also this is something that we've done with every season of The Walking Dead, and I think narratively, it's kind of cool to have that pause to digest what you've just experienced. And when you see Episode 4 of Season 2, you may need a break. It's a big episode. It's definitely a mid-season finale kind of episode. And with everything going on in that time of year with Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and a lot of family time, I think a lot of shows get lost in the shuffle there, and so I think it's good to take a pause. And narratively, it's gonna make things hit a little bit harder. And people will know what I'm talking about when the season launches.

What To Expect From Invincible Season 2

Invincible Season 2 Great Thaedus

An Invincible season 2 poster showing 24 returning characters has confirmed the continuation of characters and storylines established in season 1. Mark Grayson/Invincible will have to deal with the fallout of Omni-Man's betrayal on a personal level and on a much larger scale as Earth has lost its once-greatest protector. Omni-Man ultimately spared Mark's life and left Earth, begging the question of what he will do next. As Mark steps up to protect Earth, he will continue to work alongside superheroes from season 1, including Atom Eve, whose backstory was explored in a recently released special episode.

In addition to these familiar faces, season 2 will introduce many new characters. One of the main villains in season 2 is Angstrom Levy, who was revealed to be voiced by This Is Us' Sterling K. Brown in the season 2 trailer. Levy is a villain with a personal grudge against Mark and can open portals across the multiverse. Kirkman has teased that Levy will be a new kind of threat, as he's not an adversary who can simply be physically bested, but one who Mark will need to outsmart.

Brown voicing Levy is only one of many new additions to the season 2 cast, with Transformers' Peter Cullen, Better Call Saul's Rhea Seehorn, She-Hulk's Tatiana Maslany, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Chloe Bennet among the series newcomers. Cullen is voicing Thaedus, a pivotal character from the comics who is heard in the season 2 trailer saying, "Viltrumite against Viltrumite? That has not happened since the Great Purge." With a larger expansion of its universe, Invincible season 2 seems primed to be well worth the long wait and establish an exciting future for the show.

Invincible season 2 premieres on November 3.
