Liam Neeson's next action thriller has been revealed, with the Retribution trailer showing the star stuck behind the wheel of a car to stop his family from being blown up. Serving as a remake of the 2015 Spanish film El Desconocido, the upcoming movie is directed by Nimród Antal and is Neeson's latest entry into the action thriller genre after films like Memory, Blacklight, and The Ice Road.

Now, ahead of the Retribution release date, Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the film, showing more of what audiences can expect from Neeson's upcoming adventure. Check out the trailer below:

The trailer introduces a number of the film's supporting cast members and shows that, like other recent Neeson films, Retribution won't be skimping out on the action.

What The Retribution Trailer Reveals About The Movie

Like many modern movie trailers, the Retribution trailer reveals a lot about the movie. Neeson's character, Matt Truner, works as a bank executive and becomes a target of a mysterious criminal. The criminal has planted explosives in his car that will detonate if Matt or his children attempt to leave the vehicle. Through this threat, the trailer suggests that the criminal will get Matt to do a variety of dark deeds, including killing a longtime friend and business partner.

The trailer also shows off much of the Retribution cast, which includes Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Jack Champion (Avatar: The Way of Water), Embeth Davidtz (The Amazing Spider-Man), Arian Moayed (Succession), Noma Dumezweni (The Little Mermaid) and Emily Kusche (The Island). As for the criminal's motives, the trailer suggests that it could have something to do with the fact that Neeson's character "lost a lot of money for [his] clients," with the caller potentially being one of those clients.

Ultimately, the film looks to be in line with other Neeson action movies like The Commuter, The Ice Road, and The Marksman in the sense that Matt isn't law enforcement but a normal guy drawn into a deadly conflict. Most of Neeson's recent action movies haven't fared particularly well with critics, but perhaps Retribution will be the film that bucks the trend.
