The first Wonka trailer has arrived, revealing a proper look at Timothée Chalamet as the iconic candy maker. From Paddington director Paul King, the upcoming film serves as a prequel to Roald Dahl's 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and its original 1971 film adaptation, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder. Other than Chalamet, the Wonka cast includes several big names such as Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa.

Now, after yesterday's teaser which revealed the new logo, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the film ahead of Wonka's release date this December.

The official Wonka trailer reveals the first full look at Chalamet as the "magician, inventor, and chocolate-maker" in his early days before opening his famous chocolate factory. In his younger years, Wonka arrives in a town known as the chocolate capital of the world and begins working alongside an orphan girl played by Calah Lane, though his dreams of opening his own chocolate shop are crushed by The Chocolate Cartel. That is, until he gets an idea.

Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka looking forward in Wonka

The Wonka trailer reveals the first full look at Chalamet's performance as the eccentric chocolatier, which is the perfect mix of Wilder and Johnny Depp, the latter of whom played Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from 2005. The Wonka trailer presents a younger version of Willy who is full of joy and optimism, and has dreams of becoming the world's greatest candy-maker, which is in stark contrast to Wilder’s older, reclusive, and more cynical version of the character.

The trailer delves deeper into Willy Wonka's backstory, including his experimenting with magical treats like "Hoverchoc" and how he first met the Oompa-Loompas. Grant plays a pint-sized Oompa Loompa dancing in a glass jar, which previously made headlines when the first Wonka footage was screened at CinemaCon. Other Oscar-caliber actors include Olivia Colman playing an "evil wash house owner," in the director's words, and Sally Hawkins as Willy's mother who urges him to hold onto his dreams.

The Wonka trailer also unveils the first full glimpses of the movie's musical numbers, including Chalamet's character daydreaming of tap dancing while leading an ensemble of umbrella-wielding dancers around him. This will be just one of the movie's many musical numbers, as Chalamet confirmed there will be a total of seven. With its jubilant musical sequences and snowy setting, Wonka will be a perfect release for the holiday season come December 15.
