Nicolas Cage is a scruffy beach bum with John Wick-level killing abilities in the wacky and violent new red band trailer for The Retirement Plan. Cage has already had a strong 2023, releasing the Western The Old Way and the horror-comedy Renfield. Along the way, he also performed a somewhat controversial cameo as Kal-El in The Flash, and later this year will star as a dangerous kidnapper in the thriller Sympathy for the Devil.

But that isn’t all Cage has in store for his fans in 2023, as the prolific actor is also set to star in The Retirement Plan, which just dropped its first trailer (via Falling Forward Films). Check out the preview in the space below:

Starring alongside Cage in the violent and wacky new The Retirement Plan red band clip are Jackie Earle Haley, Ashley Greene and Ron Perlman. But the obvious star is Cage, who looks to be in full action-comedy mode this time around, sporting a scruffy look reminiscent of Jeff Bridges’ The Dude or latter-day Russell Crowe, and going full John Wick on the bad guys who show up to menace him, and his daughter and granddaughter.

Everything We Know About The Retirement Plan

The plot of The Retirement Plan sees Ashley (Greene) and her young daughter seeking the help of Ashley’s estranged father Matt (Cage), a retired beach bum living in the Cayman Islands. Soon, the reunited family is tracked down by crime boss Donnie (Haley) and his henchman Bobo (Perlman). As danger descends, Ashley quickly learns that her father has a secret past she knew nothing about.

Shot on location in the Cayman Islands, The Retirement Plan was written and directed by Tim Brown, whose prior films include the horror movies The Cradle and Devil in the Dark, as well as the family film Buckley’s Chance. As the above trailer attests, Brown’s newest film sees him veering in an action-comedy direction, getting an eccentric performance from Cage that looks like equal parts John Wick and Nick Nolte. Seeing Cage in comedic mode is always a lot of fun, and it helps to have performers like Haley and Perlman backing him up as he does his over-the-top thing, in scruffy beard and Hawaiian shirt. The Retirement Plan releases on August 25.
