Blumhouse's Insidious: The Red Door surpasses M3GAN and Scream 6 to become the highest-grossing horror movie of 2023. Directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, the team behind torture porn franchise Saw, Insidious conjured memories of classic horror films like Poltergeist when it released back in 2010. Grossing $100 million on a budget of just $1.5 million, the film launched a franchise that in 2023 released its fifth installment, starring and directed by franchise stalwart Patrick Wilson.

As fans await news on a possible Insidious 6, Blumhouse just announced a great piece of box office news about The Red Door, revealing that the summer release has now surpassed the $183 million mark, making it the top-grossing horror film of 2023. Blumhouse’s viral sensation M3GAN had been the horror champ of the year so far with $180 million, before the fifth Insidious film nudged past it. The year’s other breakout horror hit, Scream 6, now comes in third with $169 million grossed worldwide.

Will Insidious: The Red Door Finish Out The Year At Number One?

For the fifth Insidious film to finish 2023 as the number one horror hit of the year would truly be a great accomplishment, but how realistic are its chances of pulling this off? When it comes to future competition in the horror genre, the next big release on the calendar is the Conjuring universe movie The Nun II, which drops on September 8. An even bigger horror release is then set to happen on September 29 as the Saw franchise - which was of course created by Insidious masterminds Whannell and Wan - kicks back into gear with Saw X.

Stiff as the competition will be from these big franchise releases, the biggest potential threat to The Red Door’s perch atop 2023’s horror heap may come on October 13 with the release of Exorcist: Believer from Halloween reboot director David Gordon Green. Should The Red Door survive the challenge presented by the newest Exorcist film, it will have clear sailing through to the end of 2023, as there are no big horror releases planned for the final couple months of the year. Even if Insidious: The Red Door doesn’t finish the year as the box office #1 among horror movies, that it was able to take down buzzy films like M3GAN and Scream 6 is a major accomplishment in itself.
