Meg 2: The Trench director Ben Wheatley has offered a positive update for The Meg 3 ahead of the first sequel's release. Meg 2: The Trench sees Jason Statham return as Jonas Taylor, leading a research team to the depths of the ocean. There, they discover more Megalodon sharks, which end up escaping the sea's depths alongside numerous other giant creatures.

Speaking with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Wheatley gave an update about the possibility of The Meg 3, even before Meg 2: The Trench's release in theaters. The director said there is more to be explored in The Meg universe that could warrant another sequel. Check out what Wheatley had to say below:

You don't want to talk about it until Meg 2 is out. But I hope so. There's a lot more to explore in that world. It's very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting.

What To Expect From Meg 2: The Trench

Meg 2: The Trench is set to heighten the action already present in The Meg franchise. With three sharks escaping from an underwater trench alongside a giant squid and multiple smaller prehistoric creatures, Meg 2: The Trench is looking to be a wild action film. While some elements of horror may still be present, it seems Meg 2: The Trench is taking after the Fast & Furious franchise in terms of its over-the-top, CGI-laden action sequences.

While Meg 2: The Trench's trailer spoiled a death that happens in the film, there will likely be plenty of surprises in store. Meg 2: The Trench also features new cast members, including Wu Jing (The Battle at Lake Changjin), Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Rambo: Last Blood), and Skyler Samuels (Scream Queens). Because of the film's multitude of new characters and creatures, it seems Meg 2: The Trench will be trying to turn The Meg into a key action franchise.

It's currently unclear what Wheatley's plans for a possible Meg 3 would be, but there is plenty of work for him to use as reference material. The Meg film series is based on Steve Alten's novel series of the same name, which consists of eight books of content. While The Meg 3 may be some time away, if Meg 2: The Trench does well, there could be plenty of sequels in the future.
