The movie is the latest reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, which is based on the comic series of the same name that began in 1984. The new movie follows the titular heroes Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), Donatello (Micah Abbey), Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.), and Raphael (Brady Noon) as they fight a crime syndicate of powerful mutants, led by the dangerous Superfly (Ice Cube).
Per Deadline, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem box office has turned out a solid domestic opening gross. Given an extra boost by its mid-week Wednesday release on August 2, the movie had a 3-day gross of $30 million, which will end up at $45 million by the end of the weekend. This means that the movie will have already made back more than half of its $70 million budget at the domestic box office.
How Does TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Compare to the Rest of the Franchise?
As the seventh feature-length movie in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, Mutant Mayhem has a lot to live up to. It still has a long way to go if it wants to match up with the highest-grossing entries in the series, however, its opening weekend has already outgrossed the entire run of 1993's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles in Time, which totaled $42.2 million, not adjusted for inflation.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem also seems likely to easily outgross the next lowest-grossing outings in the franchise, which would be 1991's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, which made $78.6 million worldwide, and the 2007 animated feature TMNT, which made $96 million. So far, it's also tracking ahead of the 2016 live-action sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which had a five-day domestic gross of $41.7 million.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will face its biggest box office competition with the original 1990 movie and the 2014 live-action movie, both of which are titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The former earned $202 million worldwide, while the latter earned a whopping $485 million. While the international numbers for the new movie will likely help boost its overall opening, the competition of Barbie, Oppenheimer and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One makes it hard to tell if it can reach said heights.
