Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ended with Superfly’s plan thwarted by the titular heroes and their allies, but the film teases Superfly’s potential return in the sequel. Mutant Mayhem stands on its own, but it also sets up what’s to come in the animated sequel, which has already been confirmed by Paramount.

Superfly was a villain with a personal reason behind his plan. Such nefarious goals put him in the path of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who wanted to prove themselves as heroes so they could be accepted by the very humans who initially feared them. Superfly fought hard and lost, but despite being demutated at the end of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, his defeat didn’t mean we’d seen the last of him. In fact, Superfly’s return could set him up as an even more dangerous foe in the sequel, and his potential return might see him in an entirely new capacity as a part of TCRI.

TMNT Mutant Mayhem's Credits Indicate Superfly Is Alive & With TCRI

Superfly voiced by Ice Cube in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem

Superfly was defeated by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but Mutant Mayhem’s post-credits scene may have confirmed that he’s still alive, albeit in a different form. After he was demutated, it seemed Superfly was turned back into a regular fly, and he’s seen flying around inside a jar that sits next to Cynthia Utrom. It’s a small moment, but it suggests TCRI finally has Superfly under their control, and he’s helpless to stop them from doing whatever they want with him now that he’s no longer a powerful mutant.

At this point, it’s unlikely the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Superfly’s family are in the know about Superfly’s whereabouts, but it could be something they contend with in the Mutant Mayhem sequel. The fact that Superfly isn’t dead means he can return, either as a villain alongside Shredder or as an ally to the Turtles. Considering the way he left things, it’s possible Superfly will still be angry that he was not only defeated, but that his family betrayed him to work alongside the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Mutant Mayhem’s mid-credits scene wouldn’t have included the fly buzzing around if it meant that he wasn't going to be around.

TCRI Could Mutate Superfly Again To Create New Mutants & Enemies

TCRI having Superfly means they could use the ooze to transform him back into his mutant form, pushing him to work against the Turtles and their mutant allies. With so much knowledge of the mutagen, it’s doubtful TCRI wouldn’t at least try to utilize Superfly’s expertise on the matter. Superfly could lead their research team while coming up with ways to enhance the ooze. Cynthia and the TCRI could use the ooze in Superfly’s system to generate more mutants to battle the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Cynthia may have Shredder now, but Superfly managed to outsmart her and the TCRI by getting ahead of them, proving himself a dangerous villain.

He not only engineered more of the ooze, but he was able to build a machine that could mutate all of earth’s creatures at once. TCRI would want to exploit Superfly’s research to fast-track mutant enemies. Cynthia wanted to create super soldiers, and the best way to do that quickly is with Superfly’s help. Without Superfly leading TCRI’s research, Cynthia and her team could get behind, stalling the mysterious goals she has, which could very well involve the arrival of Krang. Superfly might also push his trepidation aside to work with TCRI if it means getting his revenge on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the family that betrayed him.

What Role Superfly Could Play In TMNT Mutant Mayhem 2

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem keeping Superfly alive in some capacity suggests that he will definitely return in the animated sequel. If he isn’t transformed back into his mutated form by TCRI, it’s possible Superfly’s family will try to rescue him after learning he’s been captured by Cynthia Utrom. However, there’s also a chance Superfly will only appear in the mid-credits scene of Mutant Mayhem 2 while he sits on the sidelines during the sequel’s main events. Shredder is being set up as the sequel’s primary villain, and it might be too soon to bring back Superfly; it risks repeating the story from the original film.

Although Superfly likely won’t have a large role to play in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem sequel, the filmmakers could include him to some extent, perhaps setting him up for future films. He could eventually team up with Shredder. If he does wind up leading Cynthia’s research at TCRI, it’s possible Superfly will only have a minor role before the focus shifts to other things. The sequel could confirm he’s under TCRI’s control, which ensures that Superfly isn’t forgotten and lays the groundwork for his return later on. Ultimately, having a limited role in the animated sequel doesn’t mean it’s the end for such a fascinating character.
