Summary

  • Venom 3 may feature Marvel villains like Demogoblin, Carnage, Red Goblin, Scorpion, and Orwell Taylor, expanding the franchise's ties to Spider-Man.
  • The working title "Orwell" suggests that Venom 3 could involve an embittered character seeking revenge against Venom, potentially leading a manhunt against Eddie.
  • The possibility of an antagonistic conflict between Spider-Man and Venom could present Spider-Man in a new light and make Eddie the hero audiences root for.

Several Marvel Comics villains have good chances of making appearances in Venom 3. With a third solo film for Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock already on the horizon, it’s inevitable that at least one more villain from Spider-Man’s corner of the Marvel Universe will get the live-action treatment. And if the last two movies are any indication, more than one may be on hand.

So far, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is ensuring that it makes the most of its massive catalog of Marvel characters, which includes hundreds of heroes and villains hailing from Spider-Man’s comics. And since some of his supporting characters – namely Venom – have gone on to develop their own rogues’ gallery, there’s no shortage of options Venom 3 has at its disposal when it comes to picking the anti-hero’s next challenger. Naturally, some have better odds than others when it comes to a potential role in Sony’s Venom franchise.

10 Demogoblin

Spider-Man and Demogoblin fighting in Marvel Comics

As a character typically portrayed in a significantly darker lighter than most Spider-Man villains, Demogoblin doesn’t feel like a character that would be in consideration for a role in one of Peter Parker’s MCU movies. He would, however, be right at home in Venom’s films. Essentially a demonic variation of the Green Golbin, Demogoblin was created when a demon merged with the Hobgoblin, forming a deadly new opponent for Spider-Man. Since Demogoblin also shares history with Venom, he would be an interesting fit for Venom 3 that would further deepen the franchise’s ties to Spider-Man.

9 Carnage

Carnage, ripping his way toward the viewer with a savage grin.

Played by Woody Harrelson, Carnage a.k.a. Cletus Kasady met his end in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but a return isn’t impossible. After all, it shouldn’t be forgotten that the Marvel Comics version of Carnage has overcome death himself, proving that his immense popularity is enough to validate another live-action appearance. Whether the Carnage symbiote comes back via a new host or Cletus Kasady is resurrected somehow, Carnage could return for a rematch with Eddie.

8 Red Goblin

Norman Osborn as Red Goblin in Marvel comics.

In the event that Marvel decides to bring back Carnage (but not Cletus Kasady), Marvel could elect to use the symbiote’s return to create a whole-new villain in the form of Norman Osborn’s Red Goblin. Such a scenario is a real possibility, especially since Spider-Man: No Way Home made a point of revealing that Oscorp (and presumably Norman Osborn himself) doesn’t exist in the main MCU reality. That being the case gives Venom 3 an opening to make the character part of Venom’s universe instead. If that happens, its Norman could bond with the Carnage symbiote – just as his comic counterpart did – and complete his transformation into the Red Goblin.

7 Scorpion

Venom and Scorpion in Marvel Comics

Thanks to Spider-Man: Homecoming, the MCU has its own Scorpion. However, the character never suited up and the setup for Mac Gargan fighting Spider-Man was never paid off. If Marvel no longer has plans to go down this road, Sony could effectively reboot the character in its movies by introducing a new Scorpion. Using this particular Spider-Man villain makes perfect sense when considering his own ties to the Venom symbiote. In the comics, a dying Eddie had to give up the symbiote, which led to Scorpion temporarily obtaining it. A similar scenario could unfold in Venom 3.

6 Orwell Taylor

Orwell Taylor In Marvel Comics

Reportedly, the working title of Venom 3 is “Orwell,” providing a big clue about Sony’s plans for the movie. Orwell Taylor is the name of a minor Marvel Comics villain with a vendetta against Venom. A military general whose son was killed by Venom, Orwell became consumed by the need to get revenge. To that end, he went to desperate lengths to ensure Venom paid for his crimes. Looking at Venom’s body count in the movies, it’s not hard to imagine an embittered character like Orwell Taylor leading a manhunt against Eddie in Venom 3.

5 The Jury

Venom Eddie Brock Kills innocent Guardsman Hugh Taylor Jury Vault Marvel Spider-Man

In addition to teasing the debut of Orwell Taylor, the working title for Venom 3 lays the groundwork for the Jury to join Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Consisting of Bomblast, Screech, Firearm, and Sentry, the Jury was a group of super-powered bounty hunters hired by Orwell to capture Venom. So if Orwell is trying to take down Venom, it stands to reason that the movie will use a version of his supervillain team to do the job.

4 Spider-Man

Tom Holland as Spider-Man in Homecoming.

In spite of his reputation as one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes, Spider-Man would be seen in a new light if he were to come to blows with Eddie in Venom. By exploring their conflict from Venom’s perspective, the movie could present Spider-Man as an antagonistic figure for the first time in live-action. Not only could the film have fun with that approach, but it may actually work; if a misunderstanding causes Spider-Man to wrongly pursue Venom, Eddie can be the hero audiences wind up rooting for.

3 Beetle

Marvel Comics Beetle

At this point, Abner Jenkins is one of the biggest Spider-Man villains still without a single live-action appearance in any form. Better known as the Beetle, Abner is an inventor who build an armored suit designed to assist him in his criminal activities. In a sense, Beetle fills the role of an evil Iron Man, making him a formidable adversary to Spider-Man. Due to his status as a major member of Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before Beetle gets into a Marvel movie, whether it’s Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man movie, Kraven the Hunter 2, or Venom 3.

2 Sin-Eater

sineater in marvel comics

Introduced in the 1980s, Sin-Eater represents a core part of Venom’s origin story. In Marvel Comics, Sin-Eater is a former SHIELD agent turned serial killer as well as the character who kickstarted Venom’s hatred for Spider-Man. Eddie’s journalism career fell apart when he investigated the Sin-Eater and wrote factually incorrect articles about his identity. His mistakes were exposed when Spider-Man caught the real Sin-Eater. If Sony does find a way to pit Spider-Man and Venom against each other in Venom 3, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Sin-Eater plays a similar role, allowing the movie to justify Eddie’s animosity of the wall-crawler.

1 Toxin

Venom-Toxin-Grandson-Featured-Image

Out of all the Spider-Man villains in Marvel Comics who might appear in Venom 3, the strongest candidate is none other than Toxin, the offspring of Carnage and a being more powerful than both the villain and Venom. Venom: Let There Be Carnage clearly set up Toxin through the role it gave Patrick Mulligan, the police officer who bonds with the Toxin symbiote in the comic books. After the final fight in the Venom sequel that seemingly killed Mulligan, Mulligan woke up with his eyes glowing, signaling that his evolution into Toxin has begun.
