Bo-Katan Kryze's The Mandalorian season 3 was set up 10 years ago by creator Dave Filoni. Initially conceived as a female Mandalorian Death Watch warrior, Bo-Katan was given more prominence in Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 5. Filoni elected to make her the sister of Duchess Satine Kryze, a very different origin for Bo-Katan than what George Lucas planned. By the time the show had been completely mapped out, Bo-Katan was a central figure in the final arc, the Siege of Mandalore.

Bo-Katan's story has been a part of multiple other Star Wars projects since, most notably Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian. She made her live-action debut in the latter, initially on the hunt for Moff Gideon and the Darksaber before going through an arc that led her to the Mandalorian throne. Bo-Katan was arguably the main character of The Mandalorian season 3, to the disappointment of some, but it was in line with plans Filoni had developed over a decade prior while making The Clone Wars.

Dave Filoni Always Planned To Tell Bo-Katan's Story

As part of the twist that Bo-Katan and Satine were sisters, Filoni developed a backstory for the Kryze family. This included the identity of the siblings' father, who was finally referenced in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2 "Chapter 18: The Mines of Mandalore." In a 2013 interview with IGN, Filoni revealed that he had plans to fully flesh out Bo-Katan's background.

"I have a whole story about who their father was and what their relationships were and everything with Vizsla, going back for a very long time and how that intersects with Obi-Wan Kenobi. I’d give you more detail except I’d like to tell that story at some point in some form of Star Wars media in the future. I’ve discussed it with a couple people, and we’ve started to architect it into the timeline of Star Wars somewhat, just to see where these things fit."

Naturally, Satine's history with Obi-Wan Kenobi was also thought out, though that story has yet to be told. Pre Vizsla was a strong ally of Bo-Katan's before Darth Maul took over Death Watch, leading to an eventual change of heart for the young warrior.

Bo-Katan's future was eventually explored at length, though her past has only been addressed through off-hand comments. Portions of Filoni's plan seeped into The Mandalorian season 2, when Kryze stated her armor had been in her family for three generations. The extent of Bo-Katan's upbringing was unearthed when it was revealed that she came from the Mandalorian royal family, building off of implications made by The Clone Wars. Filoni's plan to tell Bo-Katan's story came to fruition, and it's possible he always intended to do it in live-action.

Dave Filoni's Bo-Katan Vision Finally Came True

Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian season 3

The way Filoni words his comments suggests he always had live-action on his mind. In addition to planning how he could tell Bo-Katan's story in "some form of Star Wars media," it's long been known that the character was deliberately modeled after actress Katee Sackhoff. Originally providing just the voice actor for the character, Sackhoff's career as a physical performer opened the door for her to play Bo-Katan in live-action in the future. It's a subject she and Filoni dreamed of when live-action Star Wars weren't economically feasible, made a reality by The Mandalorian.

Jon Favreau's pitch for The Mandalorian made possible the inclusion of characters like Bo-Katan and Ahsoka, who could conceivably be alive and forge natural relationships with Din Djarin and Grogu. While many hoped Djarin would assume more of a leadership role going into The Mandalorian season 3, Kryze had the experience and wisdom to effectively rule her people. What was once just a vision of a live-action future became a reality, with The Mandalorian season 3 seeing Filoni's original plans for Bo-Katan through.
