Summary

  • The Witcher season 3 left many unanswered questions, including the whereabouts of Istredd and Anika, and what Vilgefortz's true plans are.
  • The murder of King Vizimir raises the question of who will be the true ruler of Redania, with Philippa manipulating events and crowning Prince Radovid.
  • Ciri's storyline ends on a cliffhanger as she joins the Rats and it's uncertain if she will embrace her darker side and become a criminal. Additionally, the Wild Hunt's intentions towards Ciri remain unknown.

The Witcher season 3 featured some of the biggest events from Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, but it also left many unanswered questions, along with the mystery of how season 4 will explain its Geralt recast. After a divisive second season, Netflix’s The Witcher returned with its third season, which was split into two parts. This was not just due to all the major events covered this season, but also because it’s Henry Cavill’s final season as Geralt of Rivia, making an event out of this new season.

The Witcher season 3 finally saw Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Ciri together and doing their best to stay safe as half the Continent is going after Ciri. Unfortunately, this didn’t last long, as Dijkstra and Philippa started the Thanedd Coup in order to destroy the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, but Vilgefortz was many steps ahead. Vilgefortz was the real traitor and has been working closely with the White Flame, triggering a series of tragic and disastrous events. The Witcher season 3 left many mysteries, along with how the series will address Cavill’s exit and Liam Hemsworth’s arrival, and here are some of those unanswered questions and how they might be answered.

11 Where Is Istredd?

The witcher season 3 Vilgefortz confronts Istredd

Although Istredd hasn’t had a big role in Netflix’s The Witcher so far, his presence was a lot stronger in season 3. Istredd continued investigating Cintra’s monolith, which led him to the Book of Monoliths. However, this book was being kept by another mage in Aretuza, and was used by Vilgefortz to frame Stregobor. Istredd knew that it was dangerous if Vilgefortz had the book as it was the key to traveling between spheres, and during the Thanedd Coup, he tried to take the book with him. Unfortunately, Vilgefortz was right behind him, so he took the book and threw Istredd through a portal. It’s unknown where Istredd was sent and if he’s still alive, but seeing how Vilgefortz used corrupted portals to mess with Yennefer, he surely isn’t in a pleasant location.

10 Who Will Be The Real Ruler of Redania?

The Witcher season 3 finale King Radovid

The Witcher season 3 Part 2 saw the murder of King Vizimir as ordered by Philippa, and under the excuse of not letting their enemies see them without a leader, she immediately crowned Prince Radovid as the new King of Redania. Philippa has already used Radovid to fulfill her own plans, which raises the question of who will be the actual ruler of Redania. In the books, after Vizimir’s murder, Queen Hedwig was supposed to take over as regent of the kingdom until her son, Radovid, became of age, as he was just 12 years old when the King was killed. However, Redania was actually ruled by a Regency Council, headed by Dijkstra and Philippa, which could also happen in the Netflix series.

9 What Happened to Anika?

The Witcher season 3 Anika

The Witcher season 3 Part 1 introduced Anika, a druid and a friend of Geralt’s mother. Geralt sought her help when he rescued Teryn, and with the help of Otto, they were able to break her out of the mind control Vilgefortz had her under. However, Teryn went into a trance and attacked Otto and Anika, and the last time viewers saw her, she was recovering. Geralt left Teryn with Anika and Otto so she could also recover, but in the finale of The Witcher season 3, Teryn was brought to Nilfgaard and presented as the real Ciri to the White Flame. This raises the question of what happened to Anika, as Teryn was under her and Otto’s care, meaning they might have been attacked by Vilgefortz’s people in order to take Teryn.

8 Will Ciri Become A Criminal?

The Witcher season 3 ending Ciri as Falka

Ciri’s story in The Witcher season 3 ended on a cliffhanger. After almost dying in the Korath desert, Ciri was found and captured by bounty hunters, who stopped at a bar on their way to Nilfgaard. There, Ciri met Kayleigh, who had also been captured by bounty hunters. Together they managed to escape, and luckily for them, the Rats arrived to help them. The Rats are a gang of criminals with a lust for murder, as seen in how they fought and killed everyone at the bar. Ciri killed the bounty hunter who captured her, impressing the Rats with her sword skills, and she introduced herself as “Falka”. Ciri will spend some time with the Rats just like in the books, but it’s to be seen if she will bring out her darker side and become a criminal and a killer like her fellow Rats.

7 What Does The Wild Hunt Want With Ciri?

The Wild Hunt in The Witcher season 3, part 1

The Wild Hunt was first mentioned in The Witcher season 1 but didn’t physically appear until the finale of season 2. Although this set up the Wild Hunt as a big presence in season 3, this group only appeared once in Part 2, and it was very brief. The Wild Hunt was chasing Ciri as she ran away from Yennefer and the sorceresses, and these spectral knights actually materialized as one of them touched Ciri’s shoulder before Geralt arrived to defend her. It’s still unclear why the Wild Hunt wants to capture Ciri, but if the Netflix series follows the books, they might want her so she can mate with their king and thus reintroduce Elder Blood to the elves, which will help them regain access to the Gate of the Worlds.

6 What Are The White Flame’s Plans For Ciri?

The Witcher season 3 finale Emhyr White Flame

One of the biggest threats in The Witcher is Emhyr var Emreis, Emperor of Nilfgaard, best known as the White Flame. Emhyr is Ciri’s supposedly dead father, and he’s now looking to capture his own daughter. The White Flame enlisted Vilgefortz to help him, and at the end of The Witcher season 3, he welcomed Teryn as Ciri to Nilfgaard, but it’s still unclear what his plans are for his daughter. Teryn taking Ciri’s place in Nilfgaard points at The Witcher possibly adapting Ciri and Emhyr’s controversial storyline from the books, in which Emhyr wanted Ciri to bear his child, as according to the Prophecy of Ithlinne, this child will be the ruler of the world.

5 What Are Vilgefortz Real Plans?

The Witcher season 2 Vilgefortz

Vilgefortz is working with the White Flame, but he’s a well-known traitor, so he most likely has his own plans. In the books, Vilgefortz wanted to capture Ciri as he wanted to claim her powers, and for that, he needed her blood. So far in the Netflix series, Vilgefortz’s motivations are unknown, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he was also looking to become the most powerful mage by taking Ciri’s powers.

4 What’s Next For The Surviving Sorceresses?

The Witcher season 3 part 2 Yennefer in the shadows

The Thanedd Coup led to many deaths on both sides of the battle, mostly on the mages' and sorceresses' side. After Tissaia’s death, the only remaining sorceresses are Yennefer, Triss, Sabrina, Keira, and Margarita, and at the end of the season, they gathered together to discuss what’s next now that the Brotherhood is over and Aretuza has fallen. Yennefer took the lead and is determined to stop Vilgefortz and find Ciri before it’s too late, but the fate of the sorceresses is unknown, as in the books, the Lodge of Sorceresses is different. In the books, the Lodge is started by Philippa, and in addition to the above-mentioned sorceresses, Francesca Findabair was also a member, with Yennefer being brought to the meetings unwillingly.

3 Did Ciri Really Give Up Her Powers In Korath?

Ciri with fire in The Witcher season 3 part 2 trailer.

One of the most unexpected moments in The Witcher season 3 happened in Part 2, when Ciri used fire magic to save her unicorn friend, Ihuarraquax, after he was wounded and poisoned by a sand monster. Using the forbidden practice of fire magic has big consequences, and Ciri had pyromantic visions narrated by Falka, in which she saw Geralt, Yennefer, and Jaskier dying because of her. Scared of what she was seeing and feeling, Ciri relinquished her powers, stopping those visions and leaving her unconscious in the desert. Ciri didn’t use her powers in the rest of season 3, so it’s unclear if she really gave her powers up or if she just suppressed them, but if she no longer has them, she can get them back just like Yennefer could in season 2 (though, hopefully, in less chaotic ways).

2 Will Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer Reunite Soon?

The Witcher season 3 part 1 Geralt Ciri Yennefer

One of the biggest criticisms of The Witcher season 2 was that Ciri, Yennefer, and Geralt spent too much time apart, and were only briefly seen together right at the end of the season. The Witcher season 3 finally saw them together and bonding as a family, but the Thanedd Coup has led them to part ways again. Geralt is now looking for Ciri with the help of Jaskier and Milva, Yennefer is leading the surviving sorceresses against Vilgefortz, and Ciri is now joining the Rats, so their reunion won’t be happening soon. In the books, it takes them a long time to reunite again, with Ciri even traveling to other spheres, Yennefer being tortured by Vilgefortz, and Geralt forming a one-of-a-kind team with other yet-to-be-introduced characters.

1 How Will The Witcher Explain Geralt’s Recast?

Blended image of Henry Cavill as Geralt and created image of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt in The Witcher

The biggest question left by The Witcher season 3 is not so much about narrative and storylines, but about a huge behind-the-scenes change that season 3 didn’t set up: Liam Hemsworth playing Geralt of Rivia in season 4. The Witcher season 3 was expected to do something to prepare the ground for Hemsworth’s arrival, but instead, it gave Henry Cavill one final battle as Geralt and saw him leave with Milva and Jaskier. There are a couple of ways The Witcher can explain its Geralt recast, but the writers will have to come up with something clever, creative, and that fits Geralt’s storyline in order to avoid even more backlash. Of course, it’s to be seen if The Witcher will survive without Henry Cavill, and the stories of the rest of the characters depend on how well season 4 and Liam Hemsworth are received.
