Summary

  • The Witcher season 4 will continue with the existing cast and focus on Geralt's adventures, but other characters from earlier in the series will also make appearances.
  • The show will introduce the concept of the multiverse, deviating from the source material, which has received a negative fan reaction.
  • The scripts for the whole of The Witcher season 4 are already complete, indicating Netflix's confidence in season 3 and ensuring the season won't be postponed due to the writers' strike.

While The Witcher season 4 remains in the production stage, there are still several details about The Witcher season 4 story and cast that can be deduced from Netflix’s announcements and the existing source material. The show is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s many novels and short stories in this fictional universe, with each season of the show blending together several of the author’s works. By the end of the show’s third season there will still be plenty of narrative threads from Sapkowski’s novels that remain untouched by the show, offering some hints regarding the direction The Witcher season 4 could take.

The casting of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt from The Witcher season 4 onwards has sparked a lot of interest, but that's far from the only reason the next season of The Witcher is gaining attention. The Witcher season 4 has been mapped out by the show’s writers for a long time, with most of the existing cast returning to continue their character arcs that have been developed throughout the course of the show. Season 4 will focus once again on Geralt of Rivia as he continues his adventures through this dangerous world and improves his abilities as the Witcher — but several other characters from earlier in the series will be making appearances alongside him.

The most recent The Witcher season 4 news reveals how The Witcher will explain Geralt's recasting, with Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill, and it's totally wild and completely deviates from the source material. Taking influence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe, producers revealed that The Witcher season 4 will essentially introduce the multiverse. Executive producer Tomek Baginski explained, "We have a very, very good plan to introduce our new Geralt and our new vision for Geralt with Liam. Not going deeply into those ideas because this will be a huge spoiler." However, Baginski added that it involves "multiple worlds and POVs."

The narrative choice completely changes The Witcher, and the fan reaction to the Witcher multiverse has been overwhelmingly negative. For example, on Reddit RedGoateeGuy bluntly stated, "I have no hope for the series" and that there's no "multiverse in The Witcher, it's just other worlds." Marco that viewers should play a drinking game and drink when "there's something that doesn't make sense, source material gets totally ignored, it's cringe or poor[ly[ written." This announcement continues a trend of the writers not having much respect for the source material — which, for a franchise like The Witcher, continues to be a significant issue.

The Witcher season 4 was officially confirmed by Netflix via an Instagram statement in August 2022. The show’s renewal had been completely up in the air since there was plenty of speculation about lead star Henry Cavill’s unwillingness to continue with the role — but this post confirmed that while Cavill will be departing after The Witcher’s third season, the show will continue Geralt’s story as it’s already been established without him.

Although The Witcher Season 4 release date hasn't yet been announced, the fact that it’s already in production is a very good sign for fans of the show. There won’t be any more news until season 3 has been released, but it’s entirely possible that The Witcher’s fourth season could find itself on Netflix before the end of 2024. That gives subscribers plenty of time to read the Witcher books before catching up with the show, though season 3 will offer a clearer indication regarding which stories the show is beginning to adapt next.

It has been known for a while now that Henry Cavill isn't returning to the series as Geralt, despite it being well-documented how much he loves the series. However, the departing star of The Witcher has finally been replaced, and the new Geralt actor is Liam Hemsworth. Liam Hemsworth is best known for playing Gale Hawthorne in the Hunger Games franchise and Jake in Independence Day: Resurgence. It'll be interesting to see how The Witcher season 4 explains the character's physical change and how the multiverse is involved. Acknowledging the changes will undoubtedly draw more attention to the casting change, and it might be better to let it go totally unmentioned.

The Witcher Season 4 Cast

Though many of the same actors are returning for the cast of The Witcher season 3, the show’s fourth season is marked by one major casting change. Following Henry Cavill’s departure, the character of Geralt will be played by Hemsworth, who is best known for playing Gale in the Hunger Games franchise. In his statement on Instagram, Henry Cavill expressed his best wishes to his replacement, writing, “I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men."

Of course, the remainder of The Witcher season 4 cast stays dependent on the events of season 3. However, there are certain characters whose appearances are pretty likely given their presence in the source material. Both Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan will probably be back for The Witcher’s fourth season, reprising their roles as Yennefer and Ciri alongside Hemsworth’s new incarnation of Geralt. There will undoubtedly be new additions to the cast list, too, but they remain unannounced.

Obviously, it depends on what route The Witcher’s writers take with season 3 before it's known how this will affect any subsequent seasons, but there are certain subplots and character relationships that will definitely continue to be relevant. Geralt’s romance with Yennefer will definitely play a large role in The Witcher season 4 story, and certain changes made to Ciri’s story in The Witcher season 3 suggest that her character will be taking an interesting journey, too. There’s still plenty of source material to work through, so the writers could essentially take any route they wanted with The Witcher season 4. The only thing that is for sure about The Witcher season 4 story is it's "multiple worlds," but how the season intends on using the multiverse is unknown.

Recent The Witcher season 4 news confirms that the scripts for the whole of season 4 are complete (via Collider). The fact that The Witcher season 4 scripts have been completed before season 3 has been released is almost unheard of, but it means two things. Firstly, it means that Netflix is extremely confident with season 3. Secondly, it means that the season won't be postponed due to the WGA writers' strike, which comes as a relief. The current writers' strike means that so many shows' developments have to be delayed until the WGA comes to an agreement with the AMPTP, but that isn't an issue for The Witcher.
