Nick Fury and Carol Danvers' relationship could change in The Marvels, after the Harvest was introduced in Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion. Secret Invasion may have become the lowest-rated Disney+ series in the MCU after its controversial finale, but the series did include some huge revelations that will certainly change the shape of the MCU's Phase 5 and beyond. Samuel L. Jackson returned as Nick Fury in Secret Invasion, marking his first solo project in the MCU, and the six-part series will inform his motivations and intentions during his next upcoming appearance in 2023's The Marvels, opposite Kamala Khan, Monica Rambeau, and Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel.

Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani will find themselves mysteriously connected in The Marvels, teaming up to take on Zawe Ashton's Dar-Benn while dealing with their own entanglement issues. The Marvels' first trailers have also shown that Nick Fury will have a large role in the upcoming film, developing his friendship with Danvers that started in the 1995-set Captain Marvel. While the film's trailers hint at a friendly relationship between Fury and Danvers, one major revelation in Secret Invasion could seriously impact the state of their friendship, and potentially lead to a much more intense battle between Nick Fury and Captain Marvel themselves.

Nick Fury's Harvest Twist Is A Ticking Avengers Time Bomb

Secret Invasion episode 5, "Harvest," introduced the eponymous Harvest to the MCU, revealed to be a vial of DNA collected from the battlefield after Avengers: Endgame's epic final fight against the Mad Titan Thanos and his army. The Harvest included the DNA of several MCU characters, including members of Thanos' Black Order, Thanos himself, and high-profile Avengers such as Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, and Captain Marvel. The Harvest allowed Gravik and G'iah to enhance themselves into Super Skrulls in Secret Invasion's finale, imbued with the collective abilities of several established MCU characters, but the Harvest could also play an important role in The Marvels.

The Marvels is set to take place after the events of Secret Invasion, meaning the mystery of the Harvest has already been revealed, and there is now a new hero (Emilia Clarke's G'iah) walking round with a host of new and impressive powers. The existence of the Harvest could get on Danvers' radar, which may lead to heated interactions with Nick Fury. Secret Invasion revealed that Fury had collected DNA samples after the Battle of Earth without the consent of anyone involved, and since many heroes are particular about their DNA falling into the wrong hands, this could create a rift between Fury and the Avengers, Captain Marvel in particular.

The Marvels' Secret Invasion Plot Tie Could Be The Harvest

Speaking to Empire Magazine prior to Secret Invasion's release (via Movieweb), Jackson revealed that "the series has to happen so that The Marvels can happen. All these things are connected in an interesting sort of way." While Secret Invasion revealed no clear connection to The Marvels, other than Fury returning to the SABER Space Station (where he can be seen in The Marvels' trailers), the Harvest could play a huge role in establishing this link. Captain Marvel could learn of the Harvest's existence in The Marvels, which would not only connect the film to Secret Invasion, but could also have potentially massive repercussions for her relationship with Nick Fury.
