Warning! Contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 4!In its latest episode, Jujutsu Kaisen featured an epic Gojo moment that is made even cooler due to one obscure reference. While this reference isn't as obscure to a Japanese audience, it is easier to miss in the West given varying translations and a general lack of familiarity with Eastern religions. But while it may be easy to miss, this reference is actually vitally important for understanding Gojo's state of mind.

In the fourth episode of Jujutsu Kaisen's second season, Gojo revives himself from the brink of death after Toji eviscerated him in the previous episode. This is only possible due to Gojo having an epiphany about his powers and Cursed Energy in general, as he learns to use reverse cursed energy to heal himself. This also unlocks the full potential of Gojo's Limitless Cursed technique, giving him access to abilities like Hollow Red and Hollow Purple. All of this makes him feel almost godlike and prompts him to say, "Throughout Heaven and Earth I alone am the Honored One," which is also a quote from the Buddha.

Jujutsu Kaisen Makes Gojo Even Cooler With a Buddha Quote

Gojo is the honored one in Jujutsu Kaisen

By putting himself on the same level as the Buddha, Gojo may sound cocky, but actually he is somewhat justified in doing so. Gojo is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the series even before he awakens to his full potential. In the series' present, he is so strong that he can blatantly disregard the commands of Jujutsu society's higher-ups and basically do whatever he wants. This has so far generally aligned with the general good, but if Gojo wanted to commit a heinous act, there wouldn't be anyone strong enough to stand in his way. Thus, Gojo is in many ways a god in his present form.

Gojo's Buddha quote here all but confirms this, which makes his epic takedown of Toji even cooler. Toji is easily one of the most powerful characters shown thus far in Jujutsu Kaisen, but ultimately he is merely human. While his heavenly pact does greatly increase his physical abilities, he has no Cursed Technique, meaning he has no access to a stronger ability that may allow him to transcend humanity. This makes his final fight with Gojo ultimately a doomed endeavor, as a human could never hope to defeat a god.

Jujutsu Kaisen Proves Its Fights Are More Than Meets The Eye

Gojo makes the Buddha's hand signs in Jujutsu Kaisen

While this moment of Gojo's awakening is already incredibly cool without the deeper knowledge of this quote, the Buddha reference makes it much more meaningful. This is actually a common trend in Jujutsu Kaisen as while the series' fights are great on a surface level, they are also often improved by subtle but important details that series creator Gege Akutami includes. Hopefully, this inspires fans to analyze Jujutsu Kaisen's epic fights more closely to uncover the even cooler meanings encoded within them.
