The streaming giant Netflix continues its expansion into the world of anime with the return of the hard-hitting, fight-heavy battle anime Baki Hanma.

The first part of Toshiki Hirano's Baki Hanma which is based on Keisuke Itagaki's manga by the same name debuted on Netflix on July 26, 2023, with the second part scheduled to premiere on August 24, 2023. Below is the new trailer for the upcoming second part.

It is Netflix's second production of the popular story and the direct sequel of that first series, Baki, which was released in September 2021. Prior to that, Netflix aired Baki: The Great Raitai Tournament Saga, which was originally released only in Japan, and stands as the first part of the most recent anime adaptation of the manga series.

The second season kicks off where the last season ended, namely with Baki continuing his bone-breaking and blood-soaked quest to defeat his father - Yuujiro Hanma, who is known as the strongest being in the world. However, there is a new contender for that title: Pickle, the super-strong caveman who preyed on T-Rex, revived after being frozen in ice for thousands of years. Right away, all the great fighters of Japan want to test their skills against Pickle's natural strength. Baki is initially uninterested, but after Pickle beats (and eats) some of the strongest martial artists he knows, his fighting spirit is stirred, and he sees Pickle as the next step in the process of becoming strong enough to beat Yujiro.

While the first Netflix series largely focused on Baki fights and his preparations for them, the first cour of season 2 focuses on Pickle as he takes on the various fighters and warriors that populate the Baki universe. It is an interesting tweak to the series as we learn more about Pickle, his fighting style, and how he used to predate on the strongest creatures who ever walked the Earth: dinosaurs. It is also a great chance to let some of the best characters in Baki's supporting cast take the stage, as Retsu Kaioh, Hanayama, and Katsumi Orochi all test the value of their thousand-years-old martial arts against the raw power of the Jurassic.

As has been the trademark of the manga and all the anime adaptations of it, this season continues its extraordinarily detailed graphic examination of fighting. Indeed, it's no secret that fans of Baki come for the fights, and this season more than delivers, considering the novelty of having a brutal savage "learn" about martial arts through his fights against the greatest masters. The fighting is dynamic and never short on intensity, showcasing the franchise's trademark poetic look at martial arts and their practitioners. While its graphic violence is not for everyone, especially the casual viewers, for fans of Baki this second season delivers on all expectations.

Baki Hanma is now streaming on Netflix worldwide.
